Pakistan income tax return: who files, when, and why it matters

Filing your income tax return in Pakistan is not only about paying tax: it decides how much you are withheld at the bank, on property and on vehicles.

Every year the FBR collects returns from salaried people, business owners and freelancers. Missing the deadline, or filing at the last minute with incomplete records, is the most common and most avoidable problem we see.

Who should file. Salaried individuals, sole proprietors, partnerships (AOPs), companies, and freelancers with income above the taxable limit should file a return. Filing is also worth doing when your income is below the limit, because being on the active taxpayer list lowers withholding on many transactions. Limits and rates change with each budget, so check the current year before you rely on a number.

Deadlines move. The usual date for individuals is 30 September. For tax year 2026 the FBR extended the deadline to 15 October 2026 after requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations. Do not count on an extension: plan to file before the original date.

What you need before you start

  1. Your NTN and FBR IRIS login details.
  2. Salary slips or employer certificates, if you are employed.
  3. Business sales, purchases and expense records for the year.
  4. Bank statements and details of property, vehicles and investments.
  5. Withholding tax certificates for tax already deducted.

Common mistakes

  • Filing without reconciling bank statements to declared income.
  • Forgetting foreign income or remittances from clients abroad.
  • Leaving wealth statement details out of line with last year.
